"We take care of the mother so that the mother can take care of her new baby"
The postpartum period, the weeks and months after the baby is born, is a transformative period in which the woman begins define herself as a mother. The mother and her partner have entered the bonding period, a time that should be characterized by minimal interruption. Village Birth Co-op Postpartum Doulas are trained to offer non-judgmental, evidenced based care for new mothers who have had vaginal or cesarean births; preemies, multiples, and mothers on bedrest. We offer guidance in monitoring the development of the baby and support new mothers in healing and bonding. We promote a holisitic approach to care giving. We model behavior; we prepare meals with the nutritional needs of mom in mind and support the physical, emotional, and practical needs of the new family, creating a sense of community during this pivotal life event.
